Holmes (Oliver Wendell Jr.) is born in Boston.

March 8, 1841

The son of the noted doctor and man of letters, Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. graduates from Harvard College, serves with the Twentieth Massachusetts Regiment in the Civil War, and graduates from Harvard Law School. He practices law, serves as editor of the American Law Review (1870-73), marries Fanny Dixwell in 1873, and lives for a time at 8 Beacon Street. Holmes becomes a legal scholar and law professor and serves on the Supreme Judicial Court (1882-1902). Named to the Supreme Court in 1902,* he becomes known for promoting judicial restraint and as “The Great Dissenter.” Holmes serves until he is 90, retires in 1932, and dies in Washington, D.C. on March 6, 1935.
